Psyllium is rising to the top in the fiber and digestive wellness category. This bulk-forming, gentle laxative is derived from the seed of the plantago ovata plant; an herb native to India that’s been used for digestion and gut health for at least 5000 years. This age-old wisdom is in a renaissance as herbalists, retailers, influencers and self-care enthusiasts alike praise the wellness-promoting properties of this classic seed husk. The water soluble, natural prebiotic fiber is naturally gluten-free, keto-friendly and plant-based.
Organic India directly sources its Organic psyllium from small scale farmers who use regenerative farming practices like agroforestry, seed saving, companion planting and silvopasture. Even better, the crop is grown in its native habitat in the rural, arid state of Rajasthan, India. Being perfectly suited to the environment, it nurtures the land, conserves water and honors age-old tradition for the most authentic and reverent psyllium experience.
But how do you consume psyllium? One of the simplest and most popular ways to consume psyllium is in water. Read on for tips and tricks.

Can you mix psyllium husk powder in water?
Yes, you can absolutely mix psyllium powder in water. All you need is 1 rounded teaspoon of psyllium powder and at least 10 oz or more of water — ideally lukewarm or room temperature water. Stir or whisk thoroughly until incorporated and drink immediately as it will thicken and form a gel that may be more difficult to swallow. Alternatively, you can allow it to form a gel first and add more water until you reach desired drinking consistency. It’s best practice to follow up your psyllium water with an additional glass of water to help move it through the GI tract for optimal digestive benefits.
Should you mix psyllium powder or whole husk in water?
We generally recommend individuals use psyllium powder vs psyllium whole husk for stir-and-sip. The powder, being finer, has quick absorb action in water and may make for a more easy and convenient psyllium water experience. All you need is 1 tsp of psyllium powder and at least 10 ounces of water. That being said, you can absolutely use the whole husk as well. In its whole husk form, it has a coarser texture that absorbs liquid more slowly so there may be a longer wait time and grainer consistency; however, if you like to drink before the gel forms this may be a good option. When using whole husk, you need 1 tbsp with at least 10 ounces of water.

Does psyllium husk dissolve in water?
Yes, psyllium husk does dissolve in water. It is a water-soluble fiber that dissolves in water to form a thick gel. It is actually a hydrocolloid, so it not only dissolves but absorbs the water and swells to create a gelatinous mass. So, while it does dissolve, it also increases the viscosity of the liquid to which it is added. This gel-like texture is also what helps add bulk to stool by absorbing water in the intestines and creating larger, softer, smoother bowel movements.
What happens when you mix psyllium and water?
When you mix psyllium powder into water, it absorbs the water and swells to become a thicker, more viscous texture. This is because it is a hydrocolloid, it thickens and expands when it comes in contact with water. If the gel-like consistency is too thick, add water so that you may enjoy its digestive benefits with ease. Psyllium has a very neutral flavor so it’s quite easy to consume, though some with a sensitive palate note that is has an earthy flavor.
Can you mix psyllium in juice?
Yes, you can definitely mix psyllium into juice instead of water. In fact, this is a very common form of consuming psyllium and making your fiber ritual even more enjoyable. Especially for those with a sensitive palate, the juice helps offset any earthy flavor. It is popularly mixed into orange and cranberry juice, but works well in apple, pear and other juices as well. You can also blend it into any of your favorite fruit smoothies. As always, it’s essential to use enough liquid. At least 10oz per 1 tsp of powder or 1 tbsp of whole husk.

Can you mix psyllium in hot water?
Yes, you can mix psyllium in hot water and some people prefer it this way stating that is dissolves more readily in warmer water. Though lukewarm or room temperature is generally recommended as opposed to hot, you can still reap the same digestive benefits when stirring into hot water. In fact, some people even like to mix psyllium into their tea. Again, you must consume at least 10oz of liquid per 1 tsp of psyllium powder or per 1 tbsp of whole husk.
Psyllium Husk Powder in Water: Step-by-Step Guide
Psyllium powder is wonderful, and potent! If psyllium isn’t part of your regular routine, consider starting with half the recommended serving and building up to the one teaspoon. Even with the smaller amount, take care to drink at least 10 ounces of water.
Because psyllium powder thickens quickly, it’s recommended to drink immediately after mixing.
With water or juice:
- Stir one Teaspoon Organic India Psyllium Powder into at least 10 ounces of water or other liquid. Or one tbsp if using whole husk.
- Drink immediately.
- Aim to drink another cup of water shortly afterward.
For smoothies:
- Blend 1 Teaspoon Organic India Psyllium Powder straight into your smoothie mixture; you can also stir into a ready-blended smoothie or shake. Or 1 tbsp if using whole husk.
- Again, be sure to use at least 10 ounces of water.
- Aim to follow up this drink with 8 ounces water shortly after finishing.

Precautions
- Do not exceed the recommended dose. Do not exceed the recommended dose in a single serving of Psyllium, as per the dosage instructions on pack. Though a recipe may call for more than the recommended dose, it is likely because there are multiple servings in the recipe. Be sure the serving you consume falls within the total recommended dose of Psyllium for safety and optimal benefits.
- Do not use it if you have difficulty swallowing. The thick gel may be difficult to swallow for people with issues and can potentially induce choking – especially if too much is taken with too little water.
- Take with plenty of water. Since psyllium absorbs liquid and expands as it makes its way through the digestive tract, it is pertinent to drink an additional full glass of water after consuming to ensure proper movement and elimination.
